A laser is used for fine engraving and for precise cutting of shapes from various materials. It needs no moulds or tools, only a digital file. That makes it suitable for personalised items, company marking and small series.

How a laser works

A laser beam moves across the material according to a digital design. The concentrated energy either vaporises the top layer (engraving) or cuts through the material over its full thickness (cutting).

Which materials we work with

  • Wood and plywood: the most common choice. Engraving creates a contrasting pattern and the cut edges are clean.
  • Leather: fine, permanent marking, suitable for wallets, belts and covers.
  • Acrylic (acrylic glass): the cut is glossy and the engraving is matt. Suitable for signs and light elements.
  • Paper and cardboard: notices, packaging and decorations.
  • Metals: the surface of some metals can be engraved, for example anodised aluminium. We handle metal cutting individually.
  • Plastics: most common plastics can be processed. We do not process PVC because it releases harmful substances.

Engraving or cutting

Operation What happens to the material Typical use
Engraving The surface layer is vaporised Logos, lettering, QR codes, photographs
Cutting Cut through the full thickness Shaped parts, templates, panels

Good projects often combine both operations, for example an acrylic sign cut to shape with an engraved logo.

Where lasers are used

  • Marking and branding: company signboards and signs.
  • Personalisation: gifts with a name, wooden boxes, boards.
  • Interiors: decorative panels and custom elements.
  • Industry: templates, nameplates and models.

Limits

With thicker materials the cut may be slightly angled, and with wood natural scorching appears on the edges. A laser does not create 3D objects. For those, 3D printing or CNC milling is more suitable.

What we need to get started

  • what you want to make (material and size),
  • how many pieces you need,
  • input files in PDF, SVG, AI or DXF format. If you do not have them, a sketch or a photo will help, and we will prepare the design from it.
